My fiancee and I are planning on having our wedding in October, but due to some rehab-related issues on his part, we want to do a small court house wedding in the much nearer future. We would still have the actual dress-tux-cake-and-all wedding in October, but I’m afraid our parents would be devastated if we did the sooner one without them. In the chance that it does happen, is there any way our parents would find out through, say, tax or insurance related things, since I’m still at home and his parents’ insurance is linked to his rehab?

What’s the rush to get married if there is a “rehab” issue and you aren’t even going to be living together anyway? You may regret having a rushed courthouse wedding later. If I were you I would just wait until October. And it depends who files your taxes and who you are insured under whether or not your parents find out you are married. If they see your insurance or tax documents, then they could find out because you legally have to admit you are married.

Coverage by his parent’s insurance usually ends the day or month a child is married. Their insurance carrier would be the one to notify them. They may also find out on the wedding day when they don’t see a marriage license.

If the marriage issue is tied to insurance and/or tax issues you are treading on thin ice. If you are marrying sooner to have legal insurance coverage that isn’t a problem but if you are keeping it a secret because insurance won’t cover his rehab if he is married just don’t do it.

Just watch out for legal trouble. You don’t want problems as you start married life. Keep in mind that the October ceremony will not legally be a wedding because you will already be legally married. You will be having a vow renewal.

In general keeping marriages a secret from family or anyone else just creates stress. If you marry in the court house please don’t keep it from your family.

I just can’t imagine being that dishonest with your family and – well, with everyone. I’d be furious if it were a friend of mine.

It is entirely possible they’ll find out and it is possible that when insurance claims are investigated you’re looking at perhaps insurance fraud.

Legally, you’re either married or you aren’t.

If you are married and continue to use his parent’s insurance, that is FRAUD. Do you want to start your marriage with illegal plans that could end up with his parents in court? How stupid is that?
