Question by Jul: Does anyone know if a person can get medical insurance after going through drug rehab?
My son went through drug rehab one year ago and is doing great. He has not relapsed at all and has set some quality goals for his life and is pursuing them. He is only 21 years old and is currently in vocational training and cannot afford his own medical insurance at this point in time, but I would like to provide that for him. Does anyone know if he’s eligible since he has a history of drug abuse?

Question by GreasyTony: Why are Immigrants Sedated Without Medical Reason?
Is this another case of people being treated like animals? It’s bad enough that they are herded like cattle and beaten like wild animals on the loose. What do you think?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/nation/specials/immigration/cwc_d4p1.html

Immigrants Sedated Without Medical Reason

The U.S. government has injected hundreds of foreigners it has deported with dangerous psychotropic drugs against their will to keep them sedated during the trip back to their home country, according to medical records, internal documents and interviews with people who have been drugged.

In a Chicago holding cell early one evening in February 2006, five guards piled on top of a 49-year-old man who was angry he was going back to Ecuador, according to a nurse’s account in his deportation file. As they pinned him down so the nurse could punch a needle through his coveralls into his right buttock, one officer stood over him menacingly and taunted, “Nighty-night.”

Involuntary chemical restraint of detainees, unless there is a medical justification, is a violation of some international human rights codes. The practice is banned by several countries where, confidential documents make clear, U.S. escorts have been unable to inject deportees with extra doses of drugs during layovers en route to faraway places.

Research Finds Fear Of Illegal Immigrant Crime Unfounded

“illegal immigrants actually are less likely than others to commit violent crimes, said researchers who study the issue. In part, they say, that’s because the immigrants don’t want to draw attention to themselves.”

I guess we know why these folks are being deported – they can’t act like civilized people long enough for the bus ride home.

I don’t like the idea of people being tranquilized like animals but i like the idea of people acting like animals even less.

Question by richard h: How to keep Medical Records Private?
I know medical records are confidential. But I have a personal condition that I want evaluated without it becoming part of my medical history. I have a history of moderate to heavy alcohol use and want to get my liver function tested and see a liver specialist. When I go to see the specialist, I know I have to be honest about my entire history for him to do a complete exam. What I don’t want is some insurance company coming up 5 or 10 years from now and saying..”you’re an alcoholic and we don’t treat preexisting conditions.” It’s likely the specialist will find nothing wrong with me but I don’t want alcohol abuse to be any part of my medical history. I thought of just going and paying cash so my insurance company would not find out. Any ideas on how to keep a medical condition private. If I’m willing to pay cash it seems it should be my own business. Many of us have private medical things and are fools to think everything is confidential. Please just try and answer my question and keep moral opinions or advice to go to AA out of this. Thanks
I already booked an appt. so they have my name and Dob. I wonder if I just paid cash and did not give them my real social if this would somehow make into my records.

Good luck. As a truck driver, they now use the insurance companies to Monitor us. We had to sign a waver that allows the insurance Company to inform the trucking company of all doctors visits that use our insurance. Their excuse, taking medically unfit drivers off the road. Personally, Unless it is a REASON to take the driver off the road, it is none of their damn business.

in case you don’t want to read all of my explanatory diatribe for asking this question, the link to the article in question is here: http://license.icopyright.net/user/viewFreeUse.act?fuid=MzE0MTAzOQ==

reasons for asking:

1 out of 5 american adults smokes–cigarettes, pipes, and/or cigars. by so doing, this 1/5 of the adult american population sustains numerous governmental agencies via the taxes assessed on tobacco products, made from a legal crop which is also, at times, subsidized by the government to ensure that no glut of tobacco products is on the marketplace at any given time, so that the growers make a living.

now then, since the stimulus package [moneys] that will be disbursed in 2010 includes language that will require that my, and your, health records will all be contained in a federal government database on the ridiculous assumption that we are too stupid to avoid duplicate medical testing (like i will not tell one of my doctors to share blood test results recently prescribed by one of my other doctors), i know that the federal government will know that i choose to smoke cigarettes.

to those of you that do not smoke, i say, yes, that is fine, that is your choice, and that if my smoking my cigarettes aggravates you, i will not smoke near you.

but you who do not smoke say that smokers are a financial burden on society because studies show that all smokers and some people exposed to secondhand smoke get sick more often and are subject to getting serious diseases and then dying before you would die, given that you do not smoke.

so, you who do not smoke may say that it should be law that i do not get an operation, for example, a hip replacement (this happens in the socialized medicine country of england all the time, therefore, our doctors perform hip replacements on british smokers at their cost since they are denied this surgery at home, but a younger britain, who does not smoke, is given a hip replacement in place of the one that smokes) if i am around the age of 65 since then the health benefit that i get from being able to walk without constant pain will be ‘wasted’ since i may die sooner than you who do not smoke. (but i may not die sooner–smokers that began to smoke in their youth and that drink alcohol every day can sometimes live beyond 100 years, and when asked how they got to be so old, they sometimes attribute it to smoking and to drinking alcohol)!

however, actuary tables prove to insurance companies that i will die sooner, therefore, they make my premiums higher to cover illnesses that they have presumed to be linked to smoking–all illnesses. yes indeed, all illnesses and all diseases are assumed to at least be complicated by the fact that a smoker smokes tobacco products.

laura bush smokes cigarettes and so does barrack obama. hmmm, not very politically popular, correct? but it is a known fact that smoking cigarettes is the worst addiction that anyone can have including addictions to heroin or cocaine. doctors, many years ago, would threaten their smoker patients that if they did not stop smoking they refused to treat them; however, in time, the addiction was made clear to these doctors, therefore, they simply tell their smoker patients that it would be good to quit.

i concede that my smoking irritates you non smokers as well as that i concede that perhaps my smoking will be the death of me. but i ask you, is my smoking cigarettes such a bad thing that it will prevent you from getting health care that you must have because i am given health care that i must have?

finally, a true cost analysis has been done that illustrates that smokers actually save you non smokers from paying higher insurance premiums as well as that we give you our old age benefits because we die sooner than you do.

this study is here:

http://license.icopyright.net/user/viewFreeUse.act?fuid=MzE0MTAzOQ==

this study verifies what some folks like me have thought all along, through the smoking debate: you, a non smoker, will have more money and health care benefits, and do also get more benefits from the taxes that i pay on my tobacco products (all sorts of benefits, such as paved roads and “better education” for your children–run by the federal government now and not by the states, which is where school issues should be decided).

and so, based on this study, do you think that when i reach age 65 and need surgery, i should be denied this surgery because my smoking has damaged my body, therefore, that i do not deserve the surgery?

DAMN!: all so that the others in their league (line of work) will attain more benefit from health care given/surgeries? what about them? (oh, also, will their health records also be in the new federal database so that their doctors do not duplicate testing)?

when you answer, please indicate your age, whether or not you smoke tobacco products (and which ones you do), and if, in your estimation, you live in a polluted environment–for instance, air polluted cities that have all the pollution given off by anything else that we use in our living other than tobacco products, for instance, pollution from manufacturing or driving.

you’ll have 7 days to answer, of course. and those of you that read what i ask and answer me know that i’ll thumb you down if you leave a nonsense one liner answer. give me your argument please. FEEL FREE TO EDIT BEFORE 7 DAYS IS GONE. thank you.

I was applying for private medical insurance and got the 2000 questions by the insurance company. All of this was on the phone. No written consents. My husband never even talked to them. They pulled up his medical history somehow on the Web and gave me all the details asking if I was aware of why he recieved certain treatments. One treatment involved shingles and he was prescribed Valtrex. This same drug also treats genital herpes. I knew why he was prescribed this medication, but if I had not, and if it was for genital herpes, it would have been quite a shock for me considering this prescription was 5 years after we were married. My question is are they violating HIPAA and do I need to file a complaint? It makes me very uncomfortable to work with this company after this.
My husband actually did not know I was applying for new coverage. I currently cover our family and was getting quotes from other companies. He never signed anything, never talked to anyone, nothing. The thing that bothers me is if this was reversed and my husband was the insurance prividor in our family and he decided to shop around. I have not had an abortion, but what if I had even before we were married or after and had not told him, but they disclosed this to him without my consent. Same thing, but backwards. Makes you think about who has our medical records and what they can do with them and how little control you have over them.

Dr. Jones runs a rehab facilitly and is treating a psychotic drug user. The patient suddenly abandons the facility leaving a note that he plans to kill his ex-wife today. The patient has left behind his antipsychotic medicine that he must take every two hours. Dr. Jones

A. may not release this information because it’s confidential.
B. may release the information
C. may release the information only if the patient authorized such release in advance.
D. may release the information after obtaining a court order first.

These answers do not make sense to me. If the patient does harm his ex-wife, the ex-wife could sue Dr. Bob for failure to warn. So is warning the ex-wife considered “releasing the information”?
