Question by RLP: Why is UC Berkely now asking for DNA samples of incoming freshmen…I know what they say…but…WHY?
The students will be asked to voluntarily submit a DNA sample. The cotton swabs will come with two bar code labels. One label will be put on the DNA sample and the other is kept for the students own records.

The confidential process is being overseen by Jasper Rine, a campus professor of Genetics and Development Biology, who says the test results will help students make decisions about their diet and lifestyle.

Once the DNA sample is sent in and tested, it will show the student’s ability to tolerate alcohol, absorb folic acid and metabolize lactose.

The results of the test will be put in a secure online database where students will be able to retrieve their results by using their bar code.

Rine hopes that this will excite students to be more hands-on with their college experience.

Large-scale recalls and a production stoppage by two major manufacturers have created a shortage of oxycodone immediate-release tablets, a potent opioid painkiller. Mallinckrodt, Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals and Vintage Pharmaceuticals have short supplies of the product due to recalls by other drugmakers, according to the FDA’s drug shortage website. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ website lists manufacturing issues at KV Pharmaceutical and Actavis as the reason for the shortage.Oxycodone shortage hurts
patients
The detox may be worse than the pain

Story by: Chris Velardi
(WTNH) – The recent Oxycodone shortage is a real pain for its users and doctors. It’s such a powerful drug that if patients are forced to stop using, they may have to go to rehab to deal with withdrawal symptoms.

Sondra has chronic back pain and the only thing that truly eases that pain is Oxycodone .

“I wouldn’t be able to function at all without it,” Sondra said.

That’s why Sondra’s concerned about a nationwide shortage of the drug. The shortage stems from a voluntary recall of Oxycodone from drug maker Ethex .

That forced pharmacies to turn to other companies that weren’t prepared and are already limited by the government as to how much Oxycodone they can produce.

I feel bad for people who need it I am lucky that i don’t need this medication.I want to buy stock in companies that are making up for the shortage .I heard on one news broadcast that each company has to give a set number to the fda each year of how many medications they will distribute and they can not under any condition distribute more.So theese companies might not make a profit off of the two shut down companies.Just wanted to know people opions on this subject. It is effecting alot of people for it to be on the news.Is it effecting you or anyone you know.My aunt has to see a doc.for medical problems chronic pain and it is effecting her.

I have tried all I know. He’s an alcoholic. I tell him to get out, he says no. I threaten to leave, he says make sure you take it all, because you’re never coming back in here. He’s missing more and more work. He’s usually at least an hour late daily and misses a few days a month because he’s hung over and has been up all night. He plays World or Warcraft every moment he isn’t working. He does sleep overs a couple times a month…probably with his brother. He won’t have anything to do with me physically…nothing. I have no proof, but I’m pretty sure he’s using drugs.

I hate that I feel like my only option is to leave and struggle or stay and be miserable. I am a complete idiot for having kids with him…I already know that. I would really like to know how a strong woman would deal with this. I always hear women say “I wouldn’t put up with that”. Do you mean you’d leave? Or what would you do? Who would you involve? I can’t find a counselor who will see us until he’s ready to deal with his addiction. He does not think he has a problem. He thinks I am his problem. He’s called me a retard and has threatened to have me put away in a mental hospital if I keep bugging him.

How do I put my foot down? Or do I have to leave? I’m so scared for my kids future, whether I stay or leave. He has told me he’d vanish before he’d pay child support to me, so that’s out of the question to count on too.

Help. I know he’s messed up and I would rather make it work. Help.
Anne, we’ve done the intervention. He won’t go and he refuses to leave the house.
Again, I’m hearing make him move out. HOW??? That’s what I want, but he won’t go!

I have an addiction to handbags…. and I have 3 white leather bags. One is Coach, one Balenciaga and the other isn’t designer.
The Coach one is a little older and is pretty dingy. The balenciaga is just a little dirty, slightly not as white as when it was new, and the non designer one is new and clean.
Is there any one product that could be used to clean all 3 bags safely without risk of ruining them?
Or a good professional leather cleaner in NYC?
I’m afraid to take any risks with them because I really like these bags and one was very expensive so I don’t want to ruin them.
Thanks for the help!

Right now I’m having an addiction to his songs haha so I’m wondering if you know any songs that are great that are by him. Here are the songs I already know so you know what other songs you can tell me:
When I’m Gone, Like Toy Soldiers, Lose Yourself, No Apologies, Cleanin’ Out My Closet, Till I Collapse, Sing For The Moment, Superman, Kim, Stan, Rock Bottom, Mockingbird, Love You More, Crack A Bottle, We Made You, Without Me, Shake That, The Way I Am, and The Real Slim Shady. I know thats a lot of the good songs he’s made but are there any other good ones?
But I love Eminem’s songs.. I dislike rap so much but just something about Eminem’s songs I like. I mostly love rock and techno but thats all.

…But, I really cannot allow my parents to find out that I’m bulimic. I purge daily, often times more. I’m very secretive about it- I only purge in the shower and I turn on the vent fan to help cover the noise further. I’m so ashamed of myself and I just want to stop. I’ve tried to stop many times but it usually only lasts a couple of days. I stopped purging for about two months at one point, but when I broke down and began purging again, I came back with 5x the intensity. I get bad chest pains sometimes and I’m afraid that my parents will find me dead, and then they’ll find out my secret.

I don’t know how to stop but it is crucial that I stop immediately. I am so embarrassed and ashamed, and I can’t bear to think of how my parents would react if they found out, so professional help is out of the question for now because I’m 17 and legally a minor.

NEED HELP! Five years ago, I would have never needed or considered doing this. We were a very stable middle class family. I had raised two children and decided to go back to school and take some classes in psychology. I became very interested in that and social work and soon quit a 20 year job to return to school. Cutting our income in half was bad but after winning an academic scholarship at the end of two years, I went on for a degree in Social Work. I drove 100 miles per day to school. In the meantime, everything went haywire. I graduated in May of this year and have not gone to work because of family responsibilities. While in school, I dealed with a son in drug addiction but now with a long period of recovery. He became a father out of wedlock to a precious baby girl in 2003. She was abandoned to him at 2 1/2 years old with mother coming back in a few months. Shortly after, a 1 1/2 year custody battle began that became ridiculous. He now has custody of her. Both of them live with my husband and I. His work has been cut by the economy to part time. He has no government help or child support aiding with this child. My husband has just had a week a month cut from his job due to economy. Our savings have dwindled away with attorney fees, medical bills, even with a bond to get me out of jail on a false criminal charge. If not for my education, I would have never considered this lawsuit, but I have watched wrongdoing of Childrens Services, classism, false accusations placed in agency files and passed around to others for months concerning me when they were not only untrue but could have been easily tested for validity. Some of these things I have documentation of, a tape recorded interview with the head of an agency showing many mistakes, etc. Other things, I have very strong circumstantial evidence concerning. Nobody here wants to fight the state. The DA’s office sure doesn’t want to be involved when they work for the state also.
Some of the many issues include:
1) Sexual abuse of my then 2 1/2 year old granddaughter. The story came to me after a long period of talking about this person in a very traumatic story one night after seeing his father who looked very much like him. I asked her to tell dad and granddad the next morning. She said enough without going into details as she did with me. They took her to Childrens Services. It was thought that I MANIPULATED the child to tell this, and I doubt was ever even documented.
2) Mother and father still had custody but both sets of parents were ordered by the court to supervise with parents at all times, including me. At the same time, they held a document saying that I was believed to have character flaws, mental illness, abuse prescription drugs, and take illegal drugs. Do you leave a child with a parent that needs supervision to be done by someone like this?
3) I walked out of a Family Meeting according to them because I was unwilling to compromise or something similar. I did walk out and told them the reason why. I had listened to what would be to everyone’s convenience for half an hour. Not once did I hear anything concerning “what was in the best interest of the child.” They also wanted both parents to sign away custody to grandparents. My son refused to do so without it being heard before a judge. I refused to sign to take custody until both parents were said to be unfit before a judge.
4) My son’s lawyer called and asked to see him and that he bring parents. When we got there, papers were already waiting for everyone to sign. Based on a conversation with Childrens Services, she had decided that there was no use representing him. She wanted him to sign rights to us. She would then become our attorney and fight to be able to get us JOINT custody with the other grandparents. She was fired.
5) For about two years this child did not know where home was. She usually was ordered to spend three days at one place and four at the other.
6) My son had held temporary custody since the abandonment. One night probably a year into this hearing, she was talking to me in bed before going to sleep. All of a sudden she said, “Don’t you know that my daddy don’t have custody anymore. Nana and Papa do” I just let it go and said nothing. The next morning I went to the courthouse to see the documents of the hearing. She was right! For 5 months they had held custody of the child. My son nor any of our family realized this. It was done on a court date where the judge had plainly said that he would not discuss custody that day…only visitation. He sent us in a room to decide on visitation for the next 2 weeks and said when settled, we were dismissed. The grandparents lawyer came out and returned to the podium. He said “your honor, we have one piece of business that we didn’t address.” The judge asked what, and bringing the paper to the judge, he said that it was the visitation agreement that we had made to be signed.
I would LOVE to at least have some more comments here!

Perhaps it’s someone closer than you thought. I am not an expert on addictions, but I’ve been told that an addiction is behavior that is usually harmful and that controls you, rather than the other way around.

Can negative thinking be an addiction? You bet it can. Can it harm you? It sure can. How can you tell if your negative thoughts are out of control? Well, the first step is awareness.Let’s make today your Day of Awareness.

As an experiment, here is something you can try, something I often ask my seminar participants to do. Try going through one whole day, 24 hours, without thinking a single negative thought. No sarcasm, no put-downs, no belittling – of others or of yourself.

Now, most people notice quite a few negative thoughts during that day of awareness. But that is not all they do. They get upset at themselves for thinking those negative thoughts, and they end up caught in a mental double negative.
The question continues and concludes with the credit due to its originator:

So give yourself a break. Just pay attention without blaming. Notice your thought patterns for 24 hours. Once you become aware of how much control negative thinking has over your life, you may choose to change it. It may be a snap to change, it may not be so easy, but you can do it! First, though, raise your awareness of what’s happening today – your Day of Awareness.

My addendum:

I wanted to offer this as a sincere Christmas gift to Yahoo! Answers participants, with the hopes that your answer, shared here or not, will enable you to have a truly happier New Year.
This is a question. But it is also something I wanted to ask for my own benefit, and for the benefit of those who respond. Since I have had some elements of negative thinking in my own life, I thought the responses may help me as well as you.
