Question by PEEONATREE: If you tell your doctor that you take drugs, what may happen?
Is it confidential? Say i have been using drugs, and a serious problem comes up. I want to tell my doc everything so my doc can figure out what is wrong and prescribe proper treatment.

Curious, I know it must happen all the time, I have relatives on dope.

nothing. what you take may affect what you need to take to get healthy.

Let’s forget about the moral issues here. I’m sure people who have drug addictions do this, but I’m wondering if anyone out there has had a valid medical condition where the pain is so overwhelming that they can’t function – and their regular doctor refuses to prescribe anything that helps.
Would you consider trying to find a doctor you knew would give you the meds without question?
I’m starting to understand why someone might do this. I have severe pelvic pain from endometriosis, PCOS and ovarian cysts. I’ve had multiple surgeries, but nothing even dulls the pain. I was having a severe headache (which is common during my cycle) and saw one of those urgent care doctors. He gave me 15 pills of this medicine, and after 10 years of constant suffering, I finally felt relief. I looked it up and ti was a narcotic though. My doc says I just have to live with the pain, but I don’t agree. I was taking 30 advil a day and still was in great pain. Anyone else out there feel the same way?
How do you convince a male doctor that your female problems are causing sever pain when he has no comprehension of what you’re going through?
I felt absolutely no side effect from this pain medicine, other than a little bit of dry mouth and dry eyes. It made me a little tired, but nothing tremendous. I didn’t feel loopy and don’t feel the need to take them needlessly. What’s the big deal with helping people stop feeling pain?
I’m 27 and want children. Hysterectomies are not proven to stop the endo – so I wouldn’t consider one anyway.
I feel like these jerky male docs think this pain is all in my head, but I’m so nauseated from the pain, on top of being completely immobile from it. I’ve tried breathing exercises and meditation just so I can get out of bed in the morning. My doc says my birth control will start working, I’ve taken them for 4 years with no help. He put me on 3 month cycles so now I have breakthrough bleeding for a good 6 weeks out of each cycle – meaning MORE pain. I’m starting to think there are no doctors who understand this.

I am aware of the Hippa laws and regulations. I know someone who is addicted to pain killers. They have been for around 6 years. Their life has spiraled in an out of control, downward motion. This person has two children who they can’t take care of because of the situation. They always go into mood swings and fits of rage, especially when they can’t get any medicine. They were admitted into the hospital, and treated for depression, and have been there for 4 days. Is there any way that anyone knows of that I may be able to talk to the Dr’s and let them know that 4 days is not long enough to treat her addiction “without the Dr’s being able to tell her what was said.” Maybe then, they would look farther and help her more. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I have agonized over what to do, and I just don’t know what the right thing is.

She didn’t say anything about checking for drugs. All she said is “I’m going to need to take some blood to see if there’s anything wrong with your thyroid.” She asked me what all I was taking and I neglected to say weed, hydrocodone, oxycodone, amphetamine and cocaine. I wouldn’t be worried but my doc is like BFFs with my mom so I’m pretty sure she could care less about confidentiality or HIPAA if she sees that stuff in my system…

I hd a hepatitis A 10 yrs ago and I hve been well. I hve no history of drinking alcohol, smoking, etc.Few months ago I had an LFT Test because a friend told me my eyes are so yellow and mybe i have Jaundice so I had been tested with Hepa A B C resulted negative but my biliburin level is very high have 3.0 and after knowing that i have jaundice i have been following the No oily and no meat diet.3 months later i hd a Liver funtion test again and my bilibirin level 1.0 which is normal. I still continued my all veg.and fruit diet no oily and meat but I sometime cheat! now again i had my latest LFT and the result of my biliburin is 2.0 again i have jaundice.I hd a partner and i fear tht my partner will get jaundice. But on my research Jaundice is a symptom of a desease. Are there other jaundice causing deseases dt is contagous other than Hepatitis?Pls. help! der been rumors spreading about me that i hd hepatitis bcoz I have jaundice! How to prove dem wrong? I am negative wd hepatitis!
i hve been researching about jaundice and it says that jaundice that there have been many causes of jaundice. And it is classified into 3 categories 1)Deseases of the liver whch is most common is hepatitis. other are medications, alcohol, viral infctions.2)Blockage of the bile from liver.3)Excessive breakdown of red blood cells in the body. If i dont have hepatitis and other deseases but i have either Blockage of bile or Excessive breakdown of blood cells each of this means the cause of my jaundice is not contagous right?

I had a series of fairly severe injuries that wound up with me prescribed percocet and then norco. I was on the two for about six months. When I’d healed and tried to stop taking them, I suffered terrible withdrawal symptoms, and, as a result, wound up buying more black market. That was a year ago.

Now, I know the smart thing would have been to tell my doctor that this was happening when I’d first been slated to stop taking them, but, in truth, I’d liked the effects and they were available. Now, in retrospect, I see how incredibly stupid I was.

So, my question is this: I know there are treatments and “weaning” drugs that a physician can prescribe, but I’m sketchy about going in and admitting to my family doctor (which my whole family, most of whom I have a tenuous relationship at best with, attends) that I’ve allowed myself to get stuck in this position. If I DO seek his help, is my name entered into some sort of master list? I know doctor-patient confidentiality prevents him from talking about it, but is there a government-maintained record? Further, is this entered into my medical history so it is available to all of my future physicians?

I do want to quit, and I have no doubt it would be easier with medical assistance, but I’m unwilling to seek it out at the expense of a lifelong legacy hanging over my head. I can wean myself off in theory without anyone’s help, it’s just hard.

I DON’T need advice telling me to go to rehab (I’m a functioning addict; I have a great job with great pay. I can’t afford to take weeks off to deal with that, nor do I want to spend thousands of dollars on it). Neither do I need advice saying, “Just quit” (try going through just one day of opiate withdrawal and tell me how easy cold turkey is). I JUST want to know what kind of stigma I can expect if I seek medical help.
@westminstershakedown: See, that’s partially what I’m worried about. Not that I’d only be able to get Advil, but that a permanent record is following you around (how else would they know to restrict you to Advil?).

@feelin witchy: If this was an excuse, I wouldn’t be looking for information to assist in quitting, now would I? You have to WANT to quit. I’m sorry to hear about your husband’s difficulties; I obviously empathize, but the reason I’m trying to gather as much info as possible is so I can make an informed decision on the best course of action here.

@BravoBear: If possible, I’d just as soon as have no record whatsoever about this, but I could tolerate a susceptibility notation I suppose.

@TweetyBird: Thank you for your candor. I have every intention of switching to a new PC for the duration of this, should this be the course I take; I’m ensuring my family doctor (who I’ve known for 20 years) won’t find OUT about it.
