Alcoholics Anonymous – Skeptics Big Book Study 4 It is my intention to shred though and analyze every page in this book once and for all. Some of my analysis maybe glancing, this is usually because the topic has been covered so many times it is not even funny. If you either can not or will not investigate things before running your mouth then go away. I thank the pundits as they are the driving force in this. No I am not hateful or angry. That’s my basic plot.

My Characters:
Chris – a severely dyslexic teenage boy, who suffers from huge mood swings. He blames his behaviour problems on the accident, and since then has become very protective of his brother, as he knows he is a target for casual cruelty. He is attracted to means of escape, which is why Landon’s offer seems like a beacon of hope to him; however he becomes trapped amidst the gang war and finds himself doing terrible things that he never thought he could ever do.

Landon (gang leader) – an incredibly manipulative teenage boy, who has always been given whatever he wants. He had a harsh childhood, and frequently witnessed his mother being beaten and raped by his stepfather. Since then, he has become very bitter, however he is very careful to hide it. He appears cool and calm on the surface; however he has surprising anger outbursts. Landon is an incredibly secretive and a dark character; he enjoys the thrill and fear that accompanies his name – that’s all he lives for.

David – left mentally retarded after an accident. He constantly strives to be like his brother, and doing so gets him beaten up by bullies. He is very easily manipulated and simplistic: he leans further and further towards Landon’s gang as Chris’s aggressive behaviour gets worse.

Evie – a very naive girl of about thirteen/fourteen, who has recently been introduced to drugs. She is very immature and vain, and is HIV positive and pregnant with Landon’s baby, however she has just given him HIV, which is why she is stabbed for revenge. She tries very hard to be different, however becomes just like many other girls in her situation, and is suffering from intense loneliness.

Ryan – Chris’s best friend, who is neglected as Chris delves deeper into the gang culture. He can be very cruel, however he is not the sort of person to do terrible things; he enjoys casual name-calling, but does not do it for any personal gain. Chris’s desertion, however, causes him to become very malicious; he is the one who suggests hurting Landon’s sister.

Martine (David and Chris’s mother) – a recovering alcoholic, who prides herself in being quite eccentric but can be very childish at times. She seeks faults in others constantly, though it is not something she intends to do. David’s accident brought her out of her alcoholism; however she has dark days frequently and is often desperately lonely and isolated. She now helps out at the Alcoholic centre.

Erin – a desperately unhappy teenager (about seventeen) who is Landon’s current girlfriend. She feels incredibly isolated – she cannot break up with him, because she knows how erratic his mood is, however if she stays with him long enough to tire of her, she doesn’t know what he’ll do.

****If you’ve read all that, thank you so much. Should I write in first or third person?

I’ve been thinking of writing a book recently and I’d like your opinion.

He couldn’t believe it. He just couldn’t believe it. After he had been released from the hospital and rehab, Josiah had hoped to try to get on as best he could after going blind. It wasn’t his fault he went blind, it wasn’t even his brother’s fault. The fault belong to the drunk driver of the semi. But now, his hope of a normal, as normal as a newly blind person’s can be, was shattered. His parents were getting a divorce. When they told him, he screamed in rage and anger and ran out into the storm. He might of heard his parents calling for him to come back, but he wouldn’t listen. He lost track of time as he just kept running, hopeing to outrun his problems. Even for a previous track star, he couldn’t. He didn’t stop to think about how stupid it was: a newly blind teenager running in a rain storm. All the time while he was running He kept thinking, why God, why.
He slipped and fell in the thick wet mud. He got to his knees at shouted into the storm “Where are You!? Why can’t I find you!?” He didn’t expect that God would answer. He wasn’t sure if he believed in God anymore, with everything that’s happened. He put his head down and he cried. He let out all his anger and sorrow. Then slowly, he noticed that the rain seemed to go quiet and the thunder too. But, this just further confused him because he could feel the rain still landing on his skin. Then he heard it. A voice that held all the secrets of the universe and power and gave him amazing and much wanted peace.
“Oh Josiah, I have been where I have always been. Right by your side” Then he knew, it was God…………………………..(fast forward)……………………………. The anger inside of Josiah was red hot. The demon in front of him had openly mocked God. It was hard to believe that it had only been six months since God had saved him from total despair. That encounter had turned his life around. He was now a Knight of Christ. And he had to punish this demon for mocking God. Of course he couldn’t harm the demon as he was, He had to put on the armor of God. He prayed for it and it appeared on him. His shinning armor. He hefted the Sword of the Spirit and felt its balanced weight. And with the Shield of Faith in front of him he headed toward the demon..

Can someone recommend a book about how alcoholics think? I’m not looking for something that explains it is a disease (I already know that) or something that is a self-help “cure” for alcoholism. I’m asking because a drunk driver killed my parents. We came to find out he has been an alcoholic for decades (bottles hidden from his wife, for example) and I want to understand his line of thinking. He thinks he is a victim in the accident too and it is not all his fault somehow. I’ve been searching Amazon but a book recommendation would be great.

Hi,

I’m looking kindly for some novel suggestion.

I’m a swedish guy in my 20′s who lives in the country side, having moved here due to my disillusionment with the capitalist lifestyle. In doing so, I made a lot of sacrifices including leaving my ex-girlfriend and a well paid job behind.

I find people on the land very friendly and they’ve been so helpful with regard to me finding my feet here. Ive also started playing music with a folk group which I toughly enjoy. I played in an orchestra in Stockholm when I was younger and dreaded it.

The only negative thing I can say is that there is a serious shortage of people my own age here.

Anyway, a lot of the books I have read in the past have played men, whites or rural people in a negative light and I feel that such a culture fails to challenge all western world people in terms of how we impact on the third world. For example, my ex often complained about the fact that I got paid more than her, but when I challenged her for buying clothes made in sweatshops by children, she never changed her shopping habits. My ex would also complain that it was harder for her to get a job because she had a Bosnian surname, but would drive to work rather than take the subway, despite knowing fine well the effect oil production has on third world regions. Its pure hypocrisy and I don’t think such attitudes are challenged in many of the books I have read. Please help? It feels that everyone wants to be a victim today and that there is a whole range of authors there to facilitate them in doing so. People want to complain about the inequalities that are part and parcel of capitalism, while still enjoying the luxuries it offers.

I saw a really good film recently about a man who is jailed for beating his wife. The woman in question then meets a new man, before her husband is released having been through the process of rehabilitation. The married pair, against all common sense, then indulge in a secret affair while you are left wondering if he actually has been cured. In the end, the new man is left heart broken. I thought it was a very intelligent film, which left you sympathizing with all three in different ways. I would like to read books which explore intelligent themes as this one does. Themes relevant to the world today.

So to sum up, I’m looking for intelligent books and indeed books which celebrate the rural lifestyle.

I’ve read Into the Wild before. I liked it but his isolation eventually led to his own demise.

Thanks for reading,

Johannas.
