I have 18 months, he has three years. He was a drug addict as well (me, too–speed, but primary alcohol). In the beginning, we talked all the time about our program, our meetings, sponsors, Higher Power, etc. It has been five months that we have been seeing each other. He is also working nights, and going to school part time. I have noticed that he goes to a meeting a week, and is pretty cynical about the “sappy” people in AA, who “hide in the program.” I am one of the sappy ones…AA saved my life.

Some people don’t want to associate with people who have helped them through troubled times. It frightens them, because they remember how bad off they were. While you obtain strength and support from the program, he feels it is holding him back in some way–like it’s not letting him move on with his life.
If he isn’t drinking or hostile, let him be. If he begins to act hostile, he should seek professional counseling.

Everyone is different. Some people go to more meetings than others. If he’s got good sobriety and is working a program he can deal with, then what’s the problem? I’m not sure about people hiding in the program. The whole idea of AA is that someone is there when a wet drunk comes in and even more to the point – that’s what keeps us sober (helping others with this problem). I know this probably isn’t a real answer – or the one you want, but… The fact of the matter is that you have to worry about you (and the things you can change) and give the rest up. You can’t make him go to more meetings and it sounds like you don’t want to go to less, so just realize that whether you’re actually “hiding” or not, it doesn’t matter. You have your program and you need to work it the way you see fit (while being true to your own self). Your sobriety and relationship with you Higher Power is your business. And it doesn’t make you sappy or weak to do what you need to do – And in the end, just read the instruction manual (the big book), talk to your sponsor, etc… the idea is to stay sober, so do whatever it takes. hope this helped…

Well this is the way I look at the AA meeting. You are not going for him are you? Because if you are you need to go for yourself. Not all people go to the grocery store the same amount of times in a month,so look for the tools you need learn them,then move on with your life. Be independent. Love yourself and look for a good future. My mom is an 84 year old alcoholic. She still makes fun of me. So I do what is best for me. Some days are good and some days are sad BUT I never give up!!!!!!!!!! HOPE THIS HELPS. BEST TO YOU!!!PS: I try to help people in worse shape than I am.Pass the tools on to someone else. This helps.
