He says he is going to taper off. That is druggie code for he doesn’t want to stop. Your friend is going to have to hit rock bottom before he realizes that he can’t stop this on his own. I have been abusing drugs since I was knee high to a grasshopper, and I have been through rehab and all that. It is sad but there really isn’t anything you can do but sit back and watch him fall.

What I would suggest doing is encouraging (and maybe physically go with him) to some 12-step program meetings (AA works, there are usually “cross addictions” meaning people are addicted to other substances than alcohol). You are right, he needs support from people who have gone through the same thing that he is about to go through. But realize he really can’t change, truly, unless he wants to himself. If he is addicted, it is likely he will do anything to get the drugs. I’m sorry he is going through this and I’m sorry that he doesn’t feel he can talk to his parents for support. I once went through an addiction and luckily I had a good friend who had gone through “the program” before and went with me to several meetings at the beginning. I went to at least two meetings a day for the first few weeks and then at least one a day after that. I would suggest the same in order for him to change his mind set and so he will be able to meet many people who can help him get through any problems that may arise from with drawls, etc.

In the meantime, you can pray for him. Prayer works. Always. You can also search the net for some websites where you can submit prayer requests and people will pray for him.

Tell his parents. If he’s like me, he’s yearning to be caught and helped, because obviously he’s feeling shame and remorse for doing what he’s already done and by not wanting to tell his parents. When my girlfriend told my parents I was doing cocaine and had quit my job, just stove up in our apartment, I was thankful. Granted it’s a totally different situation, but I think there’s some relief in knowing the help may be there.

However, if the parents are completely ignorant of addiction and will/can not empathize, then that may not be the best route. If he’s kicked on his ass rather than taken out of school to get back on his feet, he’ll simply slide deeper into addiction and self-drug himself up to where he doesn’t give a shit anymore. This will eventually lead to a turning point: an OD (overdose), rock bottom (on the street), or realization of what he’s doing to himself and possibly others. If that turning point comes and goes, and you feel it could be considered rock bottom for him, sadly the only way to go is treatment, and by treatment I mean 30 day rehab. No joke.

Continue to care for him, and continue to keep him in your life. Drug addiction is something not well empathized with by others seeing the downfall in another. “Just quit the shit” or “you don’t fucking need drugs man” are just absolutely ignorant comments. Drugs are so very powerful, and should be abolished from the face of this earth.

Bottom line: analyze his parents, their possible reaction, and try getting him to come clean with them. If he doesn’t, you need to. Save him from jail or OD’ing or whatever. He does need help, but I guarantee you he doesn’t see a glimpse of that right now.
That glimpse will come through him, but be there to support ANYTHING related to recovery and NOTHING related to getting fucked up.
