Is this ethical?

I work as a tech in a physical rehab hospital. I have a patient that was a preacher and spent many years overseas doing ministry.
He and his wife are in need of furniture for when he returns “home”. They were living in a 5th wheel, and they are on a fixed income, now looking for a cheap handicapped apartment.
My ethics are questioned, as I want to contact my church and see if they can help supply a hospital bed and other nessecities for the apartment. Is this breaking patient confidentiality?

As long as you don’t state a name of the individual, then no laws are broken.

The church doesn’t need to know the details – just tell them that there is an individual that will be in need of the items, and see what can be done.

I don’t think so. The church doesn’t have to even tell them who referred them for help. What you might do is first find out if the church can help, then ask the patient if he would like you to get your church to help. If he says no, forget it. He will probably say yes and be very grateful for your caring. Our world could use more caring people who look out for those less fortunate.

Yes. it is a breech. It would definitely be a violation of Ethics.

You can ask the preacher if you can approach your church on his behalf. If he okays it, and you find-out WHAT he’s willing to let you tell your minister…you can then approach your Church in good conscience

As long as you don’t mention names, or even gender. Always refer to him as a “patient,” not as a he. Don’t give any specifics at all. You should be fine :)

as long as you dont share patient medical information or past medical history i wouldnt think it would be a problem………the best way would be to just mention the need to your church and leave the patient name ananomys

i guess it would be but ma bey you could suggest to the couple your church could help and see what they say this ones a tough one but I’m glad to see the humanity good luck

The way to handle this is to inform them that your church may be able to help them this way and offer them contact information for the person to speak to.
Any information that you became aware of as a result of practicing your discipline is confidential.

Your Ethics or legal ethics?

If it were me, my ethics would tell me to help the individual in any way that I could, and not worry about PC

Read the story of “The Good Samaritan” and replace “The man injured” with your patient…..

Patient confidentiality is about keeping all identifiable details private. This includes name obviously, but could include more depending on the circumstances (ie if you are in a small town some people may be able to identify him if you mention that he was a preacher etc.). As long as you do not give out any information that could potentially identify this person, then you are ok.

However have you tried asking him? Or are you trying to keep it as a (lovely) surprise?

I think this is a beautiful gesture, but just make sure you go about it the right way. There is no harm in asking as long as you do not give out information that may identify the patient in any way

I would ask him or his wife if they mind you having someone from your church contact them. That way you ask….as “brothers & sisters” in the Lord I wouldn’t think they would be offened. I would think it would be an answer to prayer …a blessing even.

ask your maintenance department, I work in maintenance in a healthcare facility and it is a constant battle for me to get rid of replaced furniture and equipment. i bet your maintenance people have a storage building full of dinged equipment that still is functional. if not try one of your local hospitals. all you need is the administrators approval. many families just leave or donate potty chairs,walkers, lift chairs, hydraulic lifts, shower chairs,wheelchairs when their family member passes on. you might get some of the bigger items this way and approach you church for the smaller ADL items. good luck. p.s. i have never met a tech or therapist that didnt have a big heart.
