My husband and I are in the church but I feel bad that I have a secret addiction to Cosmopolitan Magazine. There is frank talk about sex, however some of the stories are hilarious and those stories make me feel better that no matter who you are and were you come from, embarrassing things can happen to anyone.
Our Pastor says that “those magazines” that “corrode ” the young mind and spirit. Advice?

Everyone isn’t perfect, and no one can follow a religion exactly they way they are supposed to. I don’t think that there is a problem with reading about things. As long as it isn’t something that most people would consider “nasty” or such.

Some advice? Continue thinking for yourself. If you were secretly downloading child porn, then you would have a problem. Cosmo is nothing to be ashamed of, and anyone who tries to tell you that it is, is trying to control you in extreme ways. I would also find a different church…

i do not think youre addicted. even though im not 17, i could say im “addicted” to seventeen magazine. also, the show friends. thats frowned upon in the church (im a believer too) but i go through a withdrawl if i dont watch it every night (scary, i know). i dont thinks its a big addiction at all. try to let it blow over.

I believe that you should shield your eyes from content that could lead to lust, or other “bad thoughts”. Psalm 101:3 “I will set no unclean thing before my eyes.” If you believe that Cosmopolitan contains some sexually explicit things, and those things are not intended to be shared outside a married relationship, except for medical purposes, obviously. I am a Christian, and I believe that we should not look at anything that could in any way be considered explicit (i.e.: movies, magazines, books, websites, …) In Philippians 4:7, 8: “Keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus… Whatsover things are pure… if there be any virtue… think on these things.”

does he also advise against dancing. seriously, im a Christian and go to a pretty conservative church, but your pastor seems extremely conservative. Sin is the absence of love, and if it makes your feel better and you arent acting in ways that hurt others, i say why not. if there is a larger problem i would suggest switching churches.

share your thoughts and feelings with your husband. tell him what makes you feel good. what makes you feel bad. what makes you laugh .. what makes you cry. He cared once.. cus he married you.. grow together.. dont grow apart.

myself i’d consider religion a guide.. but not a set of laws. Each situation is unique. if it betrays no one.. hurts no one.. breaks no laws.. is not dangerous.. and it makes you happy or feel good.. then i dont see why you cant do it.

If you feel guilty reading it talk to someone other than the pastor, maybe try your husband. I don’t think this falls under sin but maybe personal conviction. I go to church with some older people that believe women wearing pants are sinners but i think this is just a personal conviction.
