We’ve all heard of a 5k, so you may be asking yourself, “why a 6k?” The Heroes in Recovery 6k represents pushing yourself just a little bit harder and propelling yourself one step further. The 6k is a reminder that although you are on a personal journey, we are on the road with you. Nobody takes the road to recovery alone. This supports the overall mission of Heroes in Recovery, which is to remove the stigma associated with addiction to encourage those who need help to seek it.

Using actual written testimony from survivors of the abusive drug treatment facility Straight Inc, I compared it to the events of the TV movie “Not my Kid”

Wow. I only wish they were that compassionate in Straight – Cincinnati, OH/Plymouth, MI 1985-86. I saw this movie in school before I was sent there.

@jadeeyedblonde: Well, yeah. This is the sanitized TV movie made in 1985 about an unnamed adolescent drug “treatment” program. No way is it going to be like “Over the GW”. My point is that even when sugar-coated and sanitized beyond belief, it’s still eerie.

I remember watching this in 88 with my oldcomer. It was a candy coated version of the program.. A movie they recommended to our parents to watch. This was also the only movie we were aloud to watch until we hit 3rd phase. However, I watched it a bunch.. was on 1st for a year and a half.

I remember watching this movie with my oldcomers in 88… I remember them saying it was the only movie we were aloud to watch because it was about the program… I also remember my oldcomer laughing and saying it was “Candy coated” What freaks me out is that This was the propaganda that our folks were watching… They thought we had it that easy. HA!

I would like to hear from people familiar with Pathway Family Center and Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre to see what their opinion is between the program vaguely introduced in this movie and any similarities to the spin-off programs of today. I’ll bet there are a lot of similarities.

Also, the explanations given by staff in the movie sound like they might make sense but in the end, it is all a bunch of psychobabble withouty any scientific evidence to support it.

The staff are basically introducing a construct based on concepts that might only make sense in their own minds. This construct is only valid if you choose to believe it. For desperate parents, it is an easy way to say, It’s not your fault, it’s your kid’s fault. Most kids in these programs aren’t even on drugs.

Besides the fact that most of the inner workings in group aren’t shown (like restraint, harsh confrontation, isolation, deprivation and the effects of long term peer/group indoctination which leads to the nervous breakdown and subsequent false confessions to progress, I would say there were an enormous amount of similarities between the program in this movie and KHK. This is a great “outside view” of what the program claims to be but doesn’t show the damaging methods unseen by the parents.

This movie was made in 1985, so that’s why I referred to STRAIGHT specifically.

I see you found the full movie. Watching the whole thing makes the connection painfully obvious, IMO. The examples I included on this video are kind of tame compared to some of the other stuff in the movie.

Please tell me what you think after you watch the whole thing.

Reminds me a lot of KHK, which was basically a STRAIGHT program. Whoever made this movie must have had inside knowledge of these kinds of programs.

I would have to watch the entire movie to give a better opinion.
