Unfortunately rehab only works if you are willing to do the work. You can lead a horse to water but you can’ make them drink. I think you need to work on yourself to help you deal with this better. Look up Alanon in the phone book and go the a few meetings. There is a slogan that says come to 6 meetings and if you don’t find some help, we’ll glady refund your misery. The one thing you need to know is you didn’t cause it, you can’t control it and you can’t cure it. Good luck.

No really you need to get him into rehab again. A long term rehab!! Oxycontin stimulates the nervous system and stays in the body for a long time- so unless he gets it “all” out of his system he is going to crave the drug.

Im sorry you are going thru this. He may have to hit rock bottom before he straightens up. You may have to use some
tough love. If he lives at home and you feed him each day-you may need to kick his butt out. As long as someone else is taking care of him he isnt gonna realize how bad off he is

I suggest a therapist- not for him but for you! So you have someone to talk to that understands and someone you can talk to freely( confidentiality ) about the problems you are having with your son. Of course if you could get him to a therapist it would be good but I doubt if he would go in his state of mind.

He has an illness. Like any illness, it doesn’t effect a cure overnight, in a week, in a month. In fact, there is no cure. He may go hopefully someday into sort of a remission. But he’ll have this disease for a liftetime. A dis-ease. In the meantime he has a lot of learning to do. His mind has to be re-programmed even more than his body needs to be detoxed. Some experts think addicts are “born”, and they’ve been thinking wrong since birth. So he’s got 27 years of “stinking thinking” to get rid of. Expect relapses. They are a part of recovery – the two steps forward, one step back syndrome. But he can grow even through a relapse. Not while using, but when reflecting back as to what caused it. Please keep in mind that your son is miserable and using pills to hide mental and maybe physical pain. Subconscious pain. He doesn’t intend to hurt himself or others. That’s the consequence of the drug. I won’t advise what to do with him – that’s individual to his circumstances. But if he appears to be a danger to himself or others, I’d try to get him committed to the local psychiatric unit. For one thing it’s not jail. He would be locked up, but not with a criminal element. With others sick like himself. And he can’t check himself out, like the celebrities do. They would have the medical facilities there to deal with his detox. He will have to give them very good reasons why he should be let out after 48 hours or so. While in there he will see a psychiatrist and other health providers. He’ll probably attend a group session. He’ll be scheduled for follow-up mental health visits. He’ll be recommended to attend Narcotics Anonymous. Treatment in the local psychiatric unit could be the best thing that ever happened to him. And to you. Maybe he’ll even go voluntarily if you explain it with love and compassion. Again, even with all this, it would be great if it effected a miracle. But don’t expect it and you won’t be frustrated and angry at him. How many people have miracles with their diseases? Overnight success is an illusion. People do shake addictions and go on to live normal productive lives. Spiritual lives too, because they’ve been to Hell and back. And have taken you along for the ride too. But don’t caregivers in any disease go through Hell for their sick ones? Just because it doesn’t look like a disease, doesn’t mean it’s not.

There is no safe way for you to help your son without getting him some serious help. I had to go through the same thing but I wasn’t a concerned mother just a helpless daughter. I saw allot of that stuff in my life time but much worse. I thought that there was no help for my loved one. I just gave up. So did the rest of the family. (that’s how bad it was) Of course that person is sober now and has been for 5 years. Sometimes addicts cannot see the problem. They just cannot come to terms with it. And they really do not know how bad it effects everyone who cares about them. If you try to force him into getting help he wont want it nor will he try to clean himself up. You and your family should sit him down and have a intervention.He needs to be somewhere safe. Away from all his friends that use. If he says he wants to get help he has to change his whole lifestyle start over new.
As for you and your family do some research on addicts the more you know about the disease the more you can help.
