Question by lynne: Do I have to convince my son to enter an alcohol rehab?
Is alcoholism genetic? I’ve been asking that question to myself for months. I’m an alcoholic. I’ve already entered alcohol rehabs and received treatment but I still can’t get over it. I know alcoholism cannot be cured but I think I’m doing fine. I tried my best to stop myself from drinking and so far I’ve done a great job. I’m just worried about my son Ivan. He grew up in an environment where he sees his mother drinking alcohol everyday. He saw everything. He was there during the lowest point in my life and I loved him for not leaving me. I’m bothered by the fact that maybe he has inherited some sort of alcoholic genes. I don’t want him to end up like me. Oh, before I forget, his father is an alcoholic too.

There are some studies which show that alcoholism may be genetic but they are yet to find an “alcoholic gene’. People who grew up with alcoholic family members are most likely to become alcoholic than those who grew up in non-alcoholic environments. If you ask me, I don’t think it’s about genetics. I think it’s more about the lifestyle. A child growing up in a family whose solution to problems are solved with bottles of boose is most likely to adapt the same mechanism when he grows up. You shouldn’t be scared though because not all children of alcoholics turn out to be alcoholics too. There are some kids who are wise enough to realize that they don’t want that kind of life for themselves. They are smart enough to choose an alcohol-free lifestyle and deal with the challenges of life in a natural way. So I guess, you just have to teach your son about the negative effects of drinking alcohol as early as now. Talk to your son. Tell him that it is never the solution to any problem because it has the tendency to make things even worse. I don’t think he needs to enter an alcohol rehab.

Question by Lanie A: How do I get alcohol rehab program?
I’m twenty-one and I started drinking when I was sixteen. At first, it was just casual drinking with friends but when I got into college, I became an alcoholic. I was always out every night and I drink an average of fifteen bottles of beer. I would not go home until I felt every part of my body was filled with booze. After realizing how alcohol can kill me and how it has ruined my life, I would do anything to lose the habit. Please help me find an alcohol rehab program.

get ahold of your local department of human services or health department. they keep local numbers of groups such as aa, even drug rehab.
good luck. im proud of you, even though i have never met you. it takes a lot to admit you have a problem and it takes a real man to go get something done about it. congratulations. and again, good luck.

Question by diiamond giirl: Can my dad get disability while in alcohol rehab?
i just need to know for the sake of my mom and 2 young sisters.

alcoholism is not considered a disability because there is a cure. The government pretty much sees it as a self inflicted ailment and will not pay disability for self inflicted problems.
